Jim Larsen/staff photo South Whidbey’s busy 4th of July season kicks off Thursday when the Kiwanis Club fireworks stand opens at noon at its Ken’s Korner location. There will be other fireworks booths in the area as well, but the Kiwanis accurately boast that 100 percent of all profits go back to the community. Plus there’s no sales tax, which equals a savings of about eight percent compared to retail outlets. With safe and sane fireworks in hand, South Whidbey residents can while away the hours until the big shows get under way. First, the Celebrate America festival will take place Monday, July 3, at Freeland Park, featuring entertainment and food, and culminating with a spectacular fireworks show over Holmes Harbor at dusk. On July 4 at 1 p.m. the Maxwelton 4th of July Parade will take place, with each youngster who marches receiving 50 cents this year. Games, prizes and an afternoon of fun follow the parade. Fire District 3 Chief Don Smith reminds residents to be especially careful with fireworks as the dry weather early this week could portend trouble if care isn’t taken. As for the Kiwanis, members will man their fireworks booth from noon until 8 p.m. each day through the 4th of July. Money earned has helped support many community activities, among them: CADA, Helping Hand, South Whidbey Youth Center, HOPE, SWHS scholarships, Parks & Rec, Relay for Life, In a Pinch Crisis Child Care, Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, Children’s Center, Co-op Preschool, Sno-Isle summer reading, Red Flyer reading, Special Olympics, LMS Builders Club, SWHS Key Club, and the SW Football Association. “
