South Whidbey Fire/EMS’s first fire truck may see a bit of restoration in the future, just not in the near future.

Commissioners of South Whidbey Fire/EMS tabled discussion of selling a red 1953 Ford truck, a relic of the district founded in 1950.

Chief Rusty Palmer proposed putting the truck on the district’s surplus vehicle list and trying to sell it. The commissioners instead asked for other options, such as a possible restoration and relocation. Having it as a parade vehicle and a centerpiece at one of the district’s stations were ideas floated by the commissioners.

“It makes sense. It was the organization’s first vehicle; it has some emotional attachment,” Palmer said.

Palmer said the district is looking at temporary storage of the vehicle to protect it from the weather, to which it is currently exposed under a tent covering at the Freeland station.
