South Whidbey firefighters quickly doused a roof fire Friday afternoon at a former school in Clinton.

The home on Windfall Road, the site of the original Learning Park alternative school started more than 25 years ago by Chris and Dr. Edna Hansen, was not extensively damaged in the fire.

The fire was extinguished within minutes and there were no injuries. Damage was confined to a single upstairs wing of the home.

The current homeowner, who declined to identify herself to a reporter, said her children were burning some trash and a cinder floated up to a wooden crossbeam.

The fire was called in at 3:07 p.m. and units were on the scene in minutes, said Fire District 3 Capt. Jerry Beck.

“It was a two-alarm fire and we have four engines, three tenders and one rescue squad on hand,” he said.

While firefighters fought a few dying embers on the roof, down below firefighter Steve Lewis watched the process carefully through an electronic thermal imaging device.

“It reads the heat and shows where the hot spots are,” he explained. “With this device, we can be sure that, before we leave, the fire is out and the building is safe.”

Beck cautioned people that a burn ban is in effect in Island County and to take special care now that children are out of school.

Firefighters began clearing the scene shortly before 4:30 p.m.
