Freeland water main fixed, services to return by tonight

Water service to a small handful of homes and businesses in Freeland will be restored by 9 p.m. tonight.

Water service to a small handful of homes and businesses in Freeland will be restored by 9 p.m. tonight.

Freeland Water and Sewer District Manager Andy Campbell said repairs were finished Tuesday afternoon and that poured concrete should be dry by this evening. Once it is, the water will get turned back on, he said.

“I’m glad it’s done, I’m tired,” Campbell said.

A section of the 10-inch water main at the corner of Shoreview Drive and Woodard Avenue pulled apart early Saturday. The water had to be shut off to repair the line, but problems securing parts and later a high tide pushed back the fix until this afternoon.

The disruption in service forced the closure of Community Thrift Store, a non-profit operated by Island County Senior Services, for four days. Cheryn Weiser, senior services’ executive director, was thrilled to hear of the planned service restoration late Tuesday.

“Fabulous,” Weiser said.

The holidays are an important time of year for the store as proceeds make up about 10 percent of the organization’s annual revenue. Though the organization has liability insurance, the closure left administrators on “pins and needles” about just when they could reopen.

“We really count on the revenue this time of year,” she said.
