The newly-formed Whidbey Island Gluten Intolerance Group has just become a member of the national organization for gluten intolerance groups.

Gluten intolerance groups are an information source for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerances. This is the first time Whidbey Island has had such a local resource.

Whidbey Island Gluten Intolerance Group offers monthly meetings open to the public, which either feature a gluten-friendly restaurant or informative programs.

This Sunday, May 18 at the Freeland Library a panel of speakers will highlight four alternative gluten-free grains and flours to expand baking and meal options.

The Whidbey group is also compiling an island-wide listing of a gluten-friendly restaurants and availability of gluten-free food products as a guide for visitors and residents alike. They hope to have this listing on-line

www.wildmz@freeland.net and at area visitor information centers.

The island group membership has grown rapidly as more and more individuals are faced with the now common gluten-free dietary challenges, and there is a wealth of knowledge and resources already available. Maureen Wild provides nutritional counseling through her Quality of Life Nutrition business (360-929-4959). Gayle Torgerson runs Alternative Grains (360-678-1969), a wholesale and on-line gluten-free bakery in Coupeville.
