Christian Science

looks at divine rights

“Those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (Romans 8:14).

Being the child of God frees you from the limitations imposed by laws that God didn’t make, including sickness. Come to the Christian Science service this Sunday, May 18, for the joyful celebration of divine rights of freedom and health.

Everyone is welcome to all Christian Science services, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at

2411 E. Highway 525 (across from Useless Bay Road) on South Whidbey.

Guest speaker at Unity of Whidbey

Barbara Johns will be giving the talk at Unity of Whidbey service this Sunday, May 18.

Taking off from Byron Katie’s book, “Loving What Is,” she will describe effective processes to find and traverse our spiritual path to happiness. Her talk will lead toward a letting go of habitual thought patterns that can slow our trek toward rebirth and eventual self realization.

The service begins at 10 a.m. at Bayview Hall. All are welcome.

UUCWI looks at the value of art

“A New Source: The Arts’ Importance to Unitarian Universalists” is the topic at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island.

During this church year, the congregation has explored the six official sources of UUism.

There are many people who find the arts and the creativity the arts inspire in themselves to be a foundational source of their Unitarian Universalist values.

At UUCWI there are many artists in many different media, from painting to music to fabric arts, writing and more.

Rev. Kit Ketcham and worship leader Mary Goolsby will collaborate to explore this topic.

Children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

All are welcome. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

The Unitarian Universalist Church service is 4 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Trinity Lutheran, Woodard and Highway 525, Freeland.

Traditions of Mary at Adult Forum

On Sunday, May 18, Trinity Lutheran Adult Forum presents Libby Goldstein, M.Div. in an exploration of traditions about Mary the Mother of Jesus — from Scripture, Christian tradition, art and music.

These traditions about Mary have enriched the spiritual life of Christians through the centuries, but have also been a source of controversy.

Goldstein gives a historical overview of the development of Marian feast days in Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Orthodox calendars.

Trinity Adult Forum meets at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday in the Fireside Room at Trinity Lutheran Church. All are welcome.

Gospel of John series concludes

Ron Wedeking will complete his three-part series on Jesus’ Miracles in the Gospel of John, tomorrow morning at South Whidbey Community Church.

His topic will be “The Raising of Lazarus,” based on John 11:1-53. Wedeking is a former Covenant Church pastor, with degrees in biblical history and Greek.

There will also be a potluck lunch immediately following the service, featuring “Chef Saul’s spaghetti.” Guests and visitors are warmly invited.

On Sunday, May 25, the guest speaker will be Dr. Kathy Bence, a popular speaker who teaches Spiritual Direction.

South Whidbey Community Church intentionally enjoys a wide variety of gifted and educated speakers at each Sunday morning worship service.

Each worship service at South Whidbey Community Church begins at 10 a.m. and is preceded at 9 by an Adult Learning Forum where the Book of Romans is being discussed, led by Stan Walker. Midweek Bible studies continue in the Gospel of Luke, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, led by Art Angst at Rick and Dinah Zapata’s home.

South Whidbey Community Church is open to everyone and gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley. For information, call 321-3060.
