Winners of the High School Student Art and Poetry Show were announced by Goosefoot recently. Vienna Canright won first place in the art exhibition with her piece “World of Waste” which utilized mixed media and assorted objects. Finishing second and third were Emma Anastasi’s “The Weight of the World” (watercolor and pencil) and Maggie Reams’ “Cough Cold” (self-hardening clay and acrylic paint).

Kari Hustad’s poem, “This is how our world will end” was first place. Second place went to Rohini Mikkelsen’s piece, “I Stood,” while third place was awarded to “What If” by Sanna Bjork.

Mixed media, jewelry, works on paper and canvas created by the students are currently on display at the Bayview Cash Store. The exhibition was held under the umbrella of Whidbey Earth and Ocean Month. The theme for the art show revolved around the youths’ perspective on climate change in an effort to gain an understanding of how they are faring with the declining state of the global environment. It also provided them with an opportunity to be included in the conversation of environmental issues.

Allegra Rose Brown, Janice O’Mahony and Sandy Whiting judged the competition.

The productions will be on display until May 31.
