The South Whidbey football team unhorsed the Knights from King’s 31-0 Friday night, sealing their second winning season. The Falcons are 6-0 in the Cascade Conference, tied for first with Archbishop Murphy.

After a slow start as each team tested the other’s defenses, Falcon running back Danny Zuver rushed for the first touchdown with 1:10 left in the first quarter; TJ Russell’s extra point made it 7-0.

In the second period, wide receiver Nick Tenuta suddenly broke out of the pack for a 35-yard ramble into the endzone to move the Falcons ahead 14-0. King’s threatened but Lucas Yale’s interception took the steam out of the Knight’s drive. Russell finished with a field goal with nine seconds on the clock to make it 17-0 at the half.

On the opening kick-off, Tenuta suffered a serious pelvic injury and had to be carried off the field; his condition won’t be known for a day or two. Zuver ran a short sweep left for another TD to make it 24-0 and Hunter Rawls’ quarterback keeper made it 31-0 just as the third quarter ended.

Falcon coach Mark Hodson began shuttling in younger players to give them experience. Though the Knights tried hard to score in the fourth period, South Whidbey’s defiant defense shut them out.

“Those guys were bigger and stronger than I expected them to be,” said Knight’s coach Jim Shapiro. “Good coaching and great execution of the game plan made all the difference tonight.”

On Friday, Oct. 17, South Whidbey travels to Granite Falls, then welcomes AMHS for a league showdown on Oct. 24.
