A bad carburetor led to a car fire on Bayview Road this weekend.

An old Volkswagen Beetle caught fire after its engine ignited just west of Andreason Road. Flames engulfed the tiny car after the driver and passenger exited the vehicle. Firefighters with South Whidbey Fire/EMS let the car burn itself out and diverted traffic on Bayview Road.

Deputy Chief Jon Beck said the driver told him she heard a loud pop from the car’s rear where the engine is held. She pulled over and saw smoke.
