The first day of summer school is just like summer.On Monday, about 20 South Whidbey High School students sweated their way through their first day of summer school in an experimental program new to the district this year.The students are making up classes they failed to complete earlier in order to stay on track for a high school diploma. And it’s not a free ride — each course costs $276, and that’s not including the cost of the teacher. That expense is being picked up by the school district.Teachers are Judy Burnett who handles English 9, 10, 11, and 12, and Bill Patterson, who teaches Washington state history, physical science and biology. Burnett said health is also available if anyone signs up for it. But math isn’t being offered.The student body includes one from the 2000 senior class who needs to make up a class in order to graduate. But the rest are underclass students. Most are going into their senior year and need to complete a class, Burnett said.According to Burnett, the school board funded the program on a trial basis.More students are welcome, but they must act quickly.Classes are held each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m to noon, and students are also given homework. Classes will continue through July 28. The deadline to register is June 30. For information about joining summer school, call 341-5797.”
