More than 93,000 Puget Sound Energy customers, including all of Whidbey Island, lost power early Thursday evening after a car hit a transmission pole in Skagit County.

Power was knocked out about 5:30 p.m., PSE spokesperson Dorothy Bracken said. She said power was restored to most of PSE’s 34,000 Whidbey customers by 6:30, and the rest by 7:20 p.m.

Power was restored to Skagit County customers in phases, and was completed early Friday morning, Bracken said.

The Associated Press reported that power provided by Orcas Power and Light Cooperative to 14,000 customers in San Juan County was also disrupted.

Bracken said the car struck the transmission pole along Highway 20 near Sedro-Woolley in Skagit County, which triggered an automatic shutdown of the system.

She said power restoration was slowed because another transmission line near Anacortes that would have been used to reroute power had been taken out of service for maintenance.

“That caused the widespread nature of the outage,” she said.

The Associated Press reported that the car that struck the pole was occupied by four young adults from Sea-Tac and Sedro-Woolley, and that all were taken to a hospital.

Washington State Patrol troopers said the car was eastbound on Highway 20 when it drifted into the oncoming lanes, overcorrected and struck the power pole.
