The South Whidbey High School math team, composed of Fiona Callahan and Sean Miles, took first place in the Topical Contest and third in the Team Project among all Division Two schools in Washington at the state math competition April 18.

The High School Math Competition was put on by the Washington State Math Council.

Hundreds of teams from all over the state participated in regional contests March 11. A select number of teams then advanced to the statewide competition.

Teams are permitted up to four members, one from each high school grade.

According to a recent news release, South Whidbey High School’s three teams were among 72 which advanced to the state level. They accomplished this despite having only two members, one freshman and one sophomore per team.

Callahan and Miles’ team’s Topical score tied the best score of the much larger Division One school.

Callahan and Miles took home two plaques and a $3,000 check payable to them on the condition that they enroll in Central Washington University.

“These are the brightest group of kids I have worked with in 12 years as a math tutor-mentor on South Whidbey,” said Clyde Monma, coach, according to the release.
