Land preservation in Island County got a big salute at last Tuesday night’s Langley City Council meeting.

Mayor Paul Samuelson declared the week of Sept. 27 through Oct. 3 “Land Trust Week” in the city, and presented a copy of the proclamation to Patricia Powell, executive director of the Whidbey-Camano Land Trust.

The trust is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and will mark the occasion with a series of events and tours during the week, culminating in a celebration gala on Saturday night, Oct. 3, Powell said.

The land trust was formed in 1984 by a small group of Coupeville residents to secure two conservation easements totaling 180 acres. Today, the organization has more than 800 member households and has secured for perpetual preservation more than 6,000 acres of property in Island County, including forests, wetlands, farm lands and salmon-recovery areas.
