The Langley City Council approved a two-contract extension for City Engineer Ryan Goodman on Monday amid somewhat fleeting concerns that the city had not advertised or looked for others interested in the job.

Councilwoman Rene Neff pressed Mayor Paul Samuelson if the job had been advertised, but the mayor said it hadn’t.

Councilman Hal Seligson, who has been lobbying city officials for nearly a year now to revamp the city’s search process for jobs at city hall, indicated that desire wasn’t based on the person now in the position.

“It’s nothing personal, it’s just business,” Seligson said.

Contracts should not be self-perpetuating, he explained.

Administration officials said the job had not been posted because it was an extension of an existing contract. And Samuelson noted he had conducted an extensive review of the city engineer’s job when Goodman’s employment status was changed earlier in the mayor’s term.

The council approved the new contract 4-0.

The new two-year agreement pays Goodman $50,400 a year, which is based on an hourly rate of $131.25 for 384 hours.
