The Langley City Council unanimously approved a six-month extension Monday to keep Randy Heston in place as acting police chief for the city of Langley.

Heston, a 15-year veteran of the Langley Police Department, took over as the village’s acting police chief in March after Bob Herzberg retired.

The extension gives city officials time to figure out how they will make a permanent decision on filling the post. According to city code, only two six-month terms are possible for an acting chief appointment.

“I can’t believe six months has passed already,” Heston said later. “I’m very happy to be able to serve the citizens in this capacity for another six months.”

Langley’s Civil Service Commission was scheduled to meet this week to talk about the process for appointing a permanent chief of police for the city.

The commission’s meeting was canceled due to a scheduling conflict with one of its members.
