Limo service owner runs for mayor

Nick Green, a longtime Oak Harbor area resident, is the owner of Whidbey Island Limo Service.

A candidate for Oak Harbor mayor has learned a lot about the community — and has heard the concerns of many residents — from inside a car.

Nick Green, a longtime Oak Harbor area resident, currently owns Whidbey Island Limo Service and previously drove for Uber and Lyft in the Seattle area as well as on Whidbey Island. In fact, it was his concern about how a city policy blocked Uber from operating for months that led him to run for mayor.

“I would certainly take a look at the legal advice the city gets,” he said, adding that he’s also concerned about the city’s “open check” policy in building the sewage treatment plant and crumbling infrastructure.

Green will appear on the Aug. 1 primary election ballot along with three other candidates for mayor — Shane Hoffmire, Ronnie Wright and Craig Nurvic. The primary will winnow the candidates down to the top two.

Green comes from a military background, with both his father and mother serving in the U.S. Army. He said this experience taught him to adapt to different situations quickly and to relate to others easily. He currently lives in the city with his wife and their three children.

Green said both he and his wife are business owners in Oak Harbor and understand the challenges that entrepreneurs face.

Before driving for a living, Green first worked as an insurance professional, which gave him valuable experience he believes will help him in City Hall. He worked in Mercer Island and then moved to Whidbey Island and worked at Porter Stuurmans Insurance for seven years. He then had his own insurance agency for four years before moving into the transportation sector, which gave him more flexibility. Yet he has retained his general insurance professional designation.

In addition, he and his wife own Ohm Massage & Body Work, which his wife operates.

Green said he doesn’t have plans for immediate changes or new policies for the city but wants to hear from residents and the staff first. In fact, he said transparency and communication are key issues for him.

“I want to hear what the people of Oak Harbor want,” he said, pointing to issues like public art or parks.

In addition, Green said he believes in strong fiscal responsibility and will make sure tax dollars are spent “wisely and efficiently.”

Green said an increase in the population at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island without any additional military housing is the main reason behind the lack of affordable housing on the island. He said he’s met Navy people who live as far away as Skagit and Snohomish counties. As mayor, he could like to work with the Navy to study the issue and come up with real solutions.
