“A deteriorating roof at the Island County Fairgrounds is being replaced thanks to volunteers from the South Whidbey Lions Club.Last week, Lions Club members sweated under the hot sun as they pulled stubborn cedar shakes from the roof of the 4-H Building. Although old, the shakes were reluctant to let go of the hold they have had for decades. There’s four to six nails in every shingle, lamented Herb Bacon, one of the volunteers.On this particular day, Bacon was joined by fellow Lions Arnold Wellman, Ken Hickman, Maury Hood, John Erdeli and Ralph Nakamura, plus fairgrounds workers Michael Lanahan and Brandon Wallace.Longtime Lion Leon Mac McCloskey said the fair is supplying materials for the new roof while the Lions are supplying most of the labor. It’s going to be a two week job, he said.The Lions Club has been a presence at the Island County Fair for years with its popular corn-on-the-cob booth and other endeavors. This is the Lions’ way of helping out the fair. We appreciate what they’ve done for us for the last 50 years, McCloskey said.”
