“Legitimizing their win-filled regular season, three South Whidbey girls tennis players took on an entire 2A bi-district Saturday and won.Senior singles player Lindsay Sievers and the doubles team of Jenny Saephan and Megan Forbes brought home almost as many trophies as anyone could from Tacoma last weekend when they won the team competition at the bi-district championships.Sievers earned a bi-district singles championship along the way, while Saephan and Forbes took the runner-up award in doubles. All three girls earned a trip to the state meet.Sievers cruised in the tournament’s early rounds, dispatching Eatonville’s Michelle Ford 6-2, 6-2 in the day’s first match, then giving Steilacoom’s Maria Hererra a sound, 6-1, 6-3 drubbing a short time later. But she got a scare in her third and final match. With the bi-district championship on the line, Sievers almost dropped the first set of a match against Lakewood’s Laura Pappard, playing to a 6-6 tie before winning a 7-2 tiebreaker. In the second set, Sievers hit her rhythm, pounding Pappard 6-2 for the win.In doubles, sophomore Jenny Saephan and senior Megan Forbes upped their intensity from last week’s sub-district to earn blowout wins in their first two rounds of action. Against Vashon Island’s Tucker-Canfield pairing, Saephan and Forbes were perfect, rolling 6-0, 6-0. They were almost as merciless against Vashon’s Lai-Pierce pairing, taking that match 6-1, 6-1.The Falcon duo ran into trouble in the third round, losing a close match to Lakewood’s Gilman and Sin. Saephan and Forbes lost the opening set 5-7, but roared back 6-0 in the second. By the third, both teams had settled into a hard grind, battling to a 6-6 tie. In the tiebreaker, the Lakewood pair pulled away, winning 7-2 to take the match.Moving into the second-third place game, Saephan and Forbes looked as though they might not overcome their third-round loss. Matched against Lai-Pierce again, the two Falcons dropped the opening set 5-7. But they came back convincingly, outplaying the Vashon pairing 6-0, 6-1 in the final two sets.The three Falcon girls play at the state meet in Yakima on Friday and Saturday. Play on both days starts at 9 a.m.Boys get close in bi-districtAs South Whidbey’s girls were earning a trip to the state meet, two of South Whidbey’s boy tennis players were trying to punch their own ticket to the big show.Evan Jennings and Dorian Sidhu came close, placing third in the bi-district with one match win and two losses. Their coach, Tom Kramer, said the pair’s level of play was high, especially considering their tennis season was actually over last October. The duo suffered both its losses in hard-fought, three-set matches that, Kramer said, could have easily gone the other way on a different day.They definitely deserved to be there, he said of his players.”
