Local churches announce topics of Sunday services

Here's what you'll hear this Sunday at South End churches.

Rev. Gabriel details ‘A Spiritual Conspiracy’

Every day there is bad news, fears and doubts and negative energy that permeate the airwaves. What many don’t hear so much about are the positive, conscious growth opportunities and connections being experienced throughout the world.

At the same time that there is much criticism and condemnation, it is also being said that love is the new religion of the world.

How can these opposing energies exist at the same time? What does it mean? What can people learn from both ends of the spectrum?

Rev. Joanna Gabriel will speak on “A Spiritual Conspiracy” at the Unity of Whidbey service on Sunday, and look beyond the contradictions toward the opportunities to be encouraged and empowered by what is possible in this confusing, yet promising time.

The Unity service is 10 a.m. Sunday at Bayview Community Hall. Visitors are always welcome.

Unitarians celebrate the autumn equinox

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island will celebrate the equinox as a time to give thanks and celebrate this seasonal point of balance at the Sunday service.

Everyone is reminded that we all depend on the same air, water and sunlight and that differences are superficial when compared with the reality that everyone shares this dazzling planet.

Effie Brown will speak and Joe Arnold will be the special musician.

Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided.

UUCWI gathers at 10 a.m. Sunday at 20103 Highway 525, Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

Spiritual health is the topic on Sunday

Pastor Darrell Wenzek will speak Sunday morning at South Whidbey Community Church on the topic, “Your First Step Towards Spiritual Health,” based on 1st Peter 5:5-7.

Wenzek will also talk about the poverty of spirit that leads to God’s wealth.

Adult forum classes begin at 9 a.m. with Stan Walker continuing with the Book of Acts, and Rick Zapata will lead a study in 1st Peter chapter one. Morning worship will follow at the regular time of 10 to 11 a.m.

Art Angst will continue with the Gospel of Luke again next Sunday.

SWCC gathers for worship each Sunday at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road, Langley.

All SWCC sermons and special adult forum lectures are recorded, and copies on CD-R, or e-mailed as Windows audio attachments, may be obtained by calling 221-1220.

Christian Science focuses on the spirit

With bills to pay, traffic jams to negotiate and chores to finish, focusing on what is “not seen” can seem unimportant. Consider some things that are not “seen”: love of children, music, the tranquility of a quiet evening.

Consider how much more pleasant these “unseen” things can be — and come to the Christian Science service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20 to explore how to focus less on “matter” and more on “spirit.”

“We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.”(II Corinthians 4).

The church is at 15910 Highway 525 (just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road).
