Man charged in Oak Harbor shooting

A 38-year-old accused in a shooting on Jan. 11 is being held in jail in lieu of a $250,000 bail bond

A 38-year-old man accused in a shooting outside of an Oak Harbor apartment building on Jan. 11 is being held in jail in lieu of a $250,000 bail bond, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Ronald S. Cabell Jr. in Island County Superior Court Jan. 17 with assault in the second degree with a firearms enhancement.

A detective with the Oak Harbor Police Department wrote that Cabell and the victim had a long-standing feud that started, ironically, when Cabell’s friend shot him a year ago. The detective wrote that multiple witnesses at the Northeast Barron Drive apartment complex and Cabell himself called 911 to report the shooting.

The report describes a chaotic scene that took police time to sort through. The victim, a 47-year-old Oak Harbor man, suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was transported to Providence Medical Center in Everett for treatment.

Cabell told police that the man punched him in the jaw unprovoked and seemed to be “reaching” for a gun. Cabell pulled out his 10mm Glock and shot twice at the man, the report states.

After he was shot, the victim went to his car, pulled out a rifle and brought it into an apartment, Cabell told police. A woman from the apartment brought the rifle back out, put it into a car and tried to drive off, the detective wrote.

Cabell, however, stopped her by jumping onto the car. The woman later told police that Cabell jumped partially through an open window and hung onto the car while she drove around the apartment complex, the report states. She told police she could see that Cabell had a gun and she was frightened.

Oak Harbor police later served a search warrant on the car and found an AR-15 rifle inside, but the report makes it clear that the gun wasn’t wielded during the shooting.
