Maul throw leads to assault charge

“A 28-year-old Clinton man who allegedly threw a splitting maul at his cousin, hitting him in the posterior, was charged with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon in Island County Superior Court May 17.Garth Batchelor could face between three and nine months in jail if he’s found guilty of the charge.According to court papers, Batchelor and his cousin were involved in a long-term family dispute over some property and a business. The two men got into an argument at a Maxwelton Road site. Batchelor picked up a chainsaw and his cousin picked up an ax, but then the cousin started walking away toward his own home.Batchelor dropped the chain saw, picked up a maul and pursued his cousin. Batchelor threw the maul, hitting the man in the buttocks, the affidavit of probable cause states.The deputy wrote that the man sustained a very small red mark on his posterior.”
