Island County is planning to build a new road to Whidbey Air Park on South Whidbey and wants the public’s help to decide where it starts.
An open house on the effort, which includes up to seven possible routes, is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road. Each route is being evaluated to determine its feasibility.
Whidbey Air Park is a privately owned public-use airport located at the end of Crawford Road. The existing access is largely unpaved.
The new road effort expands off a 2007 study that evaluated the enhancement of Crawford Road between Bayview and Brooks Hill roads and Highway 525. Engineers have since been studying multiple route options to achieve public access and are identifying those routes that best meet the design requirements and project goals, according to a printed meeting announcement.
Island County Public Works staff are expected to attend today’s meeting and answer questions about the proposal. Public comments will also be accepted.
