New school board member Shawn Nowlin was officially sworn in at South Whidbey School District’s regular monthly meeting on Wednesday night.

Nowlin will occupy the at-large District 4 seat which was previously held by longtime member Steve Scoles. Nowlin ran unopposed and was won the seat following the Nov. 3 general election. Nowlin will be the board’s representative at Island County Substance Abuse and Prevention Coalition meetings, which happen once a month.

Incumbents Damien Greene of District Seat 1, Julie Hadden of District Seat 2, and Linda Racicot of District Seat 3 were also sworn in after being re-elected to their positions. All three ran unopposed.

Nowlin said, as a board member, she hopes to focus on getting out in the community to draw more people to attend meetings and be active members in voicing their opinions, especially during the budgeting process next year.

“We got to figure out how to do it the right way, but we need more people at the table because we’re not going to be the ones as affected,” Nowlin said at the meeting. “That’s one of my personal goals, is to make sure we get the right people at the table to be here.”
