New horse program under way on Whidbey Island

OK, you’ve seen the film “Dances with Wolves,” and you harbor a need to ride the range and chase buffalo, just like Kevin Costner and friends.

OK, you’ve seen the film “Dances with Wolves,” and you harbor a need to ride the range and chase buffalo, just like Kevin Costner and friends.

Problem is, you don’t know how to ride a horse.

Now, a newly formed non-profit organization called Equestrian Crossings (nicknamed EqX) has announced the beginning of its equine activities and programs.

These programs are truly for everyone with, or without, special needs; children and adults who have always wanted to take riding lessons, volunteers who love to be around horses and someone who just doesn’t feel comfortable sitting on a horse but would love to work with them on the ground or ride in a horse-drawn cart.

“It’s pretty exciting,” said instructor Denise Boyett. “This is a chance for people of any age or ability to learn to ride or simply take unmounted ground lessons.”

By that, Boyett means learning the ability to work with horses but don’t necessarily want to ride.

Boyett also offers the chance to learn how to guide a horse cart, just like Charleston Heston in “Ben-Hur.”

Well, maybe not quite like Heston, but Boyett promises it’ll be fun.

Joining Boyett are Miriam Burk and Emily Brink — until recently, all three were instructors at HOPE (Horsemanship Opportunities for Potential Equestrians).

The big difference is that EqX will offer instruction in any aspect of horse management for anyone, any age, any ability.

Boyett, reached at a Western horse-gaming event in Monroe on Sunday, said that getting children and adults excited about riding is a passion for her.

“It’s an awesome program to have on the island,” she said.

Right now sport riding, both English and western, unmounted activities and harness driving — the real name for the charming “horse and buggy” activity — as well as volunteer training, are available at the new EqX arena at Valley View Farm at 5751 Maxwelton Road in Langley on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

On Thursdays, the program will utilize the new covered arena courtesy of Jerry and Connie Lloyd, at Reinshadow Ridge in Greenbank and on Fridays, EqX has the exclusive use of the indoor arena already familiar to many families as the Gravo Arena.
