A short, frantic search made for quite a spectacle Thursday afternoon as several vessels searched for a reported pair of divers adrift between Clinton and Mukilteo.

No divers were found and nothing was recovered, leading emergency response officials to conclude there were no distressed divers in the water.

“We did a short search and didn’t find anything,” said South Whidbey Fire/EMS Chief Rusty Palmer on Friday morning.

Around 5:30 p.m., a call was made to emergency responders that people were spotted between the Columbia Beach area of Clinton and Mukilteo. It was stated that it appeared to be divers with no boat around, which prompted a search by both ferries and a trio of emergency response boats from South Whidbey Fire/EMS and Camano Island Fire & Rescue.

After an hour the search was called off by the United States Coast Guard, Palmer said.

At least five South Whidbey Fire/EMS responders were on the two boats, Palmer said, though more could have been searching. He was waiting to get the full report Friday.

They searched an area south of the Clinton Ferry Terminal and south of Columbia Beach, across the water from the Mukilteo terminal.

The call also resulted in the ferries conducting a search, delaying some traffic on the Clinton side with the Kittitas delayed at the terminal prior to the call while a car was removed from the deck.
