Alvin R. Hammons

Longtime Whidbey Island resident Al Hammons died March 20, 2002.

Alvin Ramon Hammons was born Sept. 4, 1927, at Crossroads, Mo., the first of five children of Riley and Vivian Hammons. After high school, Al enlisted in the Navy and spent three postwar years in China. His 15-year career as a brakeman for Northern Pacific Railroad ended with an injury in 1965. He lived the rest of his life at his beloved farm on Cultus Bay, property that will become a park under the terms of his will.

Al was preceded in death by his former wife, Billie, and a brother, Bill Hammons. He is survived by three sisters, Lucille Harrison of Salem, Ore., Sarah Louise Renwick of Renton, and Virginia Bagg of Encinitas, Calif.; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

His wishes for cremation and a private memorial have been carried out.

His family and friends will remember and miss his amazing spirit.

Bailey Johnson

Bailey Madison Ann Johnson died April 3, 2002, at Children’s Hospital, Seattle, following a sudden illness. She was born Feb. 3, 1998, in Coupeville to Corey and Kathryn (West) Johnson.

Bailey was always on the go. She liked to watch the Mariners and wear her hat just like her brother. She loved reading books with mom and dad, Rollerblading in the driveway, swimming at Whistler and making hot chocolate. She was a very happy, busy child.

She is survived by her parents, Corey and Kathy Johnson, a brother, Kyle, and sisters Katelund and Kelsey, all at home in Oak Harbor; her grandparents, Clint and Pat West of Oak Harbor and Gene and Betty Johnson of Yuma, Ariz.; great-grandparents Dorothy Camandona of Clinton and Clara and Carl Jackson of Bothell; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral Mass for Bailey will be celebrated April 8 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, with Rev. John J. O’Leary, S.J., celebrant. The Rite of Committal will follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall at St. Augustine’s Church.
