“A Mukilteo man convicted of making death threats against his South Whidbey girlfriend will spend more time in prison than almost anyone else guilty of the same offense.Victor Osalde, 22, was convicted by an Island County Superior Court jury on April 20 on four counts of felony telephone harassment. On Tuesday, Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock sentenced Osalde to four years in prison for the crimes. The standard sentence for felony harassment is nine to 12 months. Michael Henegen, an assistant prosecuting attorney working the case for Island County, said Judge Hancock chose to make the sentences for each of Osalde’s convictions run consecutively, rather than concurrently. In his findings of fact for the case, Hancock said Osalde was deliberately cruel and showed a lack of remorse for his crimes. Hancock said the threats were part of a pattern of domestic violence Osalde had perpetrated against his Langley-area girlfriend. In his conclusions of law, Hancock said Osalde’s long sentence will protect the public from a dangerous offender and will give Osalde time to seek professional psychiatric help.Henegen said Hancock’s sentencing verdict was everything his office could have wanted.This is what we had hoped for, he said Thursday.However, it was not what Osalde wanted to hear. Henegen said the convicted man directed a profane statement at Judge Hancock after the sentencing.Even a tabloid wouldn’t print what he said, Henegen said.During Osalde’s trial, prosecutors maintained the threats stemmed from the fact that Osalde did not like making child support payments to his ex-girlfriend. In the phone calls he made to the woman, Osalde said that his brothers had killed three people and that she should expect him to kill as well. He threatened to kill the ex-girlfriend and her mother, prosecutors said.Osalde’s brother, Jesse, is currently awaiting trial in Cowlitz County for the murder of Clinton resident Ed Ross.The Langley Police Department and Island County Sheriff’s Office cooperated to arrest Victor Osalde for making the death threats.Island County prosecutors originally charged Osalde with seven counts of felony harassment, occurring between Sept. 1998 and Feb. 2000. Osalde plead guilty to two of those charges.”
