Road projects in the works

The Langley City Council approved the transportation improvement plan this week.

The Langley City Council approved the transportation improvement plan this week.

The body unanimously adopted the document following a public hearing Monday at City Hall. The plan outlines road and trail projects that could be completed within the next six years, though each is funding dependent and the vast majority won’t be done.

“It’s a wish list,” said Challis Stringer, director of Public Works.

The plan, which is updated annually, is important because projects must be on the list to be eligible for certain federal and state funding sources. The 19 projects total an estimated $8.3 million.

Some are expected to move forward, however. They include the reconstruction of Second Street, about $1.5 million; a funicular to the marina, about $800,000; resurfacing Anthes Avenue between Second and Sixth Streets, about $300,000; and two Edgecliff Drive projects totaling about $970,000.

They will see the reconstruction of roadway from Decker Avenue west to Camano Avenue and the resurfacing from Decker east to city limits.

Stringer said all the project costs are rough estimates and will be paid for with a combination of federal, state and local funding sources.
