School petition drive gaining speed

A petition drive designed to encourage the South Whidbey School District board of directors to slow down its decision on the future of Langley Middle School and overall restructuring process has been making the rounds. The document, with close to 600 signatures, will be presented to the board at its meeting on July 22.

The petition asks the board to retain programs at the elementary, middle and high school and requests that no students be moved until facilities are ready for them. It is the latest demonstration by critics who want to see the school board change direction, or at the least allow more time for the community to comment.

The school board plans to make its final determination at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 in the elementary school’s community room. The school restructuring decision will be the last item of the night.
