South Whidbey churches announce Sunday events

South Whidbey churches have announced the topics for this Sunday's services.

‘Turning toward Morning’ at UUCWI

Rev. Kit Ketcham will consider friendship and how friends can enhance spiritual and religious life at the Sunday service for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Whidbey Island.

The title of the sermon comes from a song by Gordon Bok that speaks of the power of friendship to provide hope and support in the darkest of times.

All are welcome. Values-based children’s religious exploration classes and childcare will be provided. The service is at 10 a.m. at 20103 Highway 525, just north of Freeland. Check www.whidbey.com/uucwi for more information.

Pastor Wedeking to speak on thankfulness

Pastor Ron Wedeking brings the sermon tomorrow morning to South Whidbey Community Church. His sermon title is, “Thankfulness is a Life Choice,” based on Paul’s letter to the church at Thessalonica, Chapter 5, Verse 18.

Sunday worship is from 10 to 11 a.m. and is preceded by an adult learning forum at 9 with Stan Walker leading a study in the book of First Corinthians, and Rick Zapata leading a study in the Book of Genesis: the lives of the patriarchs. These are open classes and everyone is invited.

Home Bible studies are also offered; check the church website for times and locations.

All SWCC sermons and special adult forum events are recorded, and are available at www.whidbeychurch.org.

SWCC is a local independent, non-denominational church that welcomes everyone and gathers for worship at the Deer Lagoon Grange, 5142 Bayview Road.

Learning to accept a new reality on Sunday

“In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust …” (Psalms 31:1)

“If mortals would keep proper ward over mortal mind, the brood of evils which infest it would be cleared out … Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgement, if virtue and truth build a strong defense,” (“Science and Health”).

Media presents an ongoing onslaught of supposed danger and evil that one might not understand but accepts as reality.

On Sunday, Nov. 27, the Christian Science service explores the influences that create and feed the fear that God is not the only power and creator.

Change your thought, your perspective and change your experience (reality). “Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power,” (“Science and Health”).

The service is at 10:30 a.m. at 15910 Highway 525, just north of Bayview and across from Useless Bay Road. All are welcome.

Praying over bread and wine in Freeland

“Prayers Over Bread and Wine” will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Dec. 1, 8 and 15 at St. Augustine’s in-the-Woods Episcopal Church.

All are welcome to participate in this Advent program. Evenings will begin with a light supper of soup, salad and bread followed by teaching and discussion led by Rev. William Seth Adams as he helps participants look at the church’s practice of praying over bread and wine from very early times.

Sunday’s prayers will also be considered, with the aim to deepen and enrich one’s engagement in these prayers.

The church is located at 5217 S. Honeymoon Bay Road.
