“Photo: South Whidbey’s Tristan Johnson pitches against Kamiak. As a reliever, he was credited with both wins on Sunday, a rare feat for a pitcher. Playing under hot, sunny skies the way baseball was meant to be played, the South Whidbey American Legion Post 141 team swept a two-game series against Kamiak on Sunday. The tiny crowd leaned back and soaked up the sun as action unfolded on the field. And there was plenty of it, particularly in game one which South Whidbey won 9-8. The first game went back and forth with the island boys pulling it out on a clutch shot to the center field wall by Jimmy Davis, which knocked in the tieing and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. On defense, Kevin Arndt had six assists and Justin Barnes made an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch near the center field wall in the top of the seventh. The offensive star of the game was Tristan Johnson, who went 3-for-3 with a triple. Johnson also picked up the he win in relief of Jimmy Davis and Brian Gabelein. Game two started out with a bang as Kevin Arndt, South Whidbey High School’s all-time home run king, rocketed a two-run homer over the center field fence in the first inning. Also having good days at the plate were Brady Switzer, Jimmy Davis and Brian Gabelein, all collecting two hits apiece. On defense, Arndt once again collected six assists from the shortstop position. On the mound, Tristan Johnson recorded his second victory of the day after relieving Chris Paterson in the fifth inning. Post 141 was scheduled to play the Anacortes club at South Whidbey on Monday, as well as a double-header with the same club in Anacortes on Wednesday. This weekend they travel to play Camas at their home park.”
