South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District has applied for a zoning change in Community Park and is welcoming public comments until the end of October.

Parks Director Doug Coutts said at the monthly meeting last Wednesday that district officials have submitted a letter to the county, and signs have been posted alerting neighbors of the change so they can voice concerns as part of protocol.

Nothing of note will change with the rezoning. Coutts said he simply wants to consolidate land owned by the district into one parcel so if district officials ever decide to build something in the future, there wouldn’t be a property line that would act as a buffer.

Coutts added it doesn’t make sense for Community Park land parcels to be labeled as rural land, which some currently are.

“We are parks, so the land we own should be zoned appropriately.”
