The board of commissioners for the Port of South Whidbey will hold a public hearing this week on the proposal to declare 14.04 acres of land above Possession Beach Waterfront Park as surplus property.

The public hearing is 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the meeting room of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, located at 6309 Wilson Place in Clinton.

The upland property includes the location where AT&T has proposed to construct a cell phone tower. Nearby property owners have been opposed to the cell tower proposal, while AT&T representatives have said the tower would provide increased phone coverage throughout the South End and improve wireless and emergency 911 phone reception and high-speed broadband Internet service.

Declaring the land as surplus would allow the port to sell the property. At an earlier meeting, port officials removed language from planning documents that referenced future work on the project.
