TACOMA — The South Whidbey girls relay team and the Falcons’ basketball star-turned-tennis titan surpassed all expectations over the weekend.

All but their own.

The Falcons’ fantastic five — the relay team of Hope Richards, McKenzie Walker, Gwen Bakke and Lauren Sandri and tennis player Lindsey Newman — were crowned as state champions Saturday after beating the best from high schools across the state.

In Tacoma, Richards, Walker, Bakke and Sandri beat teams from 40 high schools in Washington to become state champs in the 800-meter relay race.

Even before the initial race to determine who would qualify for the finals, the Falcons fab four shared an infectious optimism.

“I think, no, I knew, we were going to win,” Sandri said.

Meanwhile, in the heat of the Yakima Valley, Newman prevailed through four back-to-back tennis matches and won the singles state 2A title Saturday after beating the player who had handed Newman a loss earlier in the season.

Newman, the standout point guard and leading scorer on the Falcon basketball team last season, was almost flawless in her run to the tennis state title.

South Whidbey tennis coach Tom Kramer said he had downplayed Newman’s skills all year so she wouldn’t become over confident.

“Some kids need that team support but Lindsey was out there all by herself.

“She’s a class act. All our kids are,” Kramer said.
