Tennis builds momentum to 3-1 record

“Someone forgot to tell the members of the South Whidbey girls tennis team that they are a 2A team this year. It’s probably for the best, since the Falcons downed three 3A Wesco opponents in four meets over the past two weeks. They beat Monroe 6-1 on March 14, Everett 6-1 on Tuesday, and Lynnwood 5-2 on Thursday. Only Jackson was able to take advantage of the Falcons’ still-developing, early-season form, beating them 6-1 on March 16. That was no surprise to the team’s coach, Tom Kramer, who knew going in that Jackson is the best of the best.Jackson is the best. There’s no getting around it, Kramer said. That meet aside, the team has been winning more matches than the Falcon players might have expected. In the season opener against Monroe, the Falcons sent a cadre of sophomores and other new varsity players onto the court without the help of team standouts Kelsey Ellis and Lindsay Sievers, who were still playing in the state basketball tournament. Overpowering wins from Kylie Bozym, Jenny Saephan, Paige Jolley — amongst others — leashed the Bearcats and set the tone for the following three meets. Our sophomores are helping big time, Kramer said. This week, Sievers showed that it does not take her long to get back on form. After winning the Falcons’ only game in Jackson at number-four singles, Sievers won back-to-back number-one matches Tuesday and Thursday. Her coach said he is happy to have her back. She’s rusty, but she’s in shape, he said. The Falcons played Stanwood on the road Tuesday. Thursday they are scheduled to host Arlington.”
