The 84th Island County Fair arrives tomorrow, offering a good time for just about anyone of any age.

Whether one’s taste runs to fine quilts, cotton candy, clowns, animals, cool music or a Ferris wheel ride in the sky, it’s all here.

Curly fries, too.

The fun starts each day at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. on Thursday, 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, then 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Fairgoers can get half off any admission ticket with a donation of two cans of food from

9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday,

Aug. 14. Food donations will be used to help replenish the Good Cheer Food Bank.

“Many people believe the best parts of the fair are the terrific local items — livestock, crops, arts, crafts, flowers, veggies and every sort of handwork are on display in the fair’s exhibit buildings,” said fair administrator Sandey Brandon. “We have it all, the best of Island County.”

At 10 a.m. Saturday the annual parade begins in downtown Langley with horses, music and lots of kids having the time of their lives. Martha Murphy, the founder of Whidbey Children’s Theater, is the grand marshall.

Food rules at fair time, and new on the food court among the 76 commercial, food and community vendors this year are Momma Pat’s Kitchen featuring Belgian waffles and buffalo chicken wings; Dinky Donuts; Camano Island Roasted Corn and the Golden Grill with Hawaiian chicken and luau sticks.

Of course, music is always on the menu at the fair. Variety shows will run throughout each day, capped by the headliners on the main stage.

At 8:15 p.m. Thursday, “Free Rain” takes to the Midway Stage.

At 8:30 p.m. Friday, Danny Vernon presents his “Illusions of Elvis” show.

At 7 p.m. Saturday the Timebenders will offer 50 years of music and a ton of costume changes.

Closing out the week at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday will be the Cherry Red Band.

“At each of these headline shows, fairgoers will have the chance to win free tickets for big- time concerts,” Brandon said. “No, Willie Nelson and Chicago won’t be at our fair, but tickets for their concerts, plus Frankie Valli and Neil Diamond, will be given away nightly at the Eva Mae Gabelein Midway Stage.”

There will be plenty of rides, too. Ticket packages will be available to help keep ride costs down, but the special advance-purchase wristbands are all sold out.

The tractor pull has been replaced this year with a mechanical bull ride, which will provide photo opportunities galore for parents.

Friday is “Senior Day,” with special activities including a reception and dancing to big-band sounds.

Don’t forget the famous Bunyon Buster Log Show, a perennial fan favorite.

There will be sign-ups, practice and exhibitions from today through Saturday, Aug. 16.

Saturday will feature an exhibition led by world champion log roller Jenny Owen. The action in the pond is open to anyone; Owen especially loves to train kids to roll. The week ends Sunday with participants competing in 20 log-related events for prizes and cash — it’s a really big show.

Finally, fair officials said there will be baby pigs for viewing in the swine barn.

Now, that’s entertainment!
