Three 15-year-olds were injured Friday night near Clinton when their pickup truck, traveling at high speed, sideswiped a power pole and cartwheeled or rolled 100 feet into a field, officials said.

Trooper Jason Longoria of the Washington State Patrol’s Oak Harbor office said the accident occurred about 10 p.m. as the 1999 Ford Ranger pickup traveled south on Ewing Road about a mile south of Sills Road.

Deputy Chief Mike Cotton of Island County Fire District 3 said the driver, who listed an Everett address, was the most seriously hurt and was transported to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville with possible internal injuries. Cotton said he was trapped and unconscious as the vehicle rested on the driver’s side and had to be extracted.

The passengers, a boy and a girl, both from South Whidbey, suffered cuts and bruises, but were able to get out of the truck and walk across the field to a nearby house to report the accident, Cotton said.

They also were taken to Whidbey General, where they were treated and released.

Longoria said that none of the teens had a driver’s license, only instructional permits, but that the investigation was continuing and that no citations had been issued as of Monday morning. He said all three teens had been wearing seat belts.

“He shouldn’t have been driving,” Longoria said. “They’re lucky they got out of there alive.”

Meanwhile, another young South End driver escaped serious injury Monday morning when his car sideswiped another power pole, swerved across the roadway and landed in a ditch, Cotton said.

He said the mishap occurred about 8:30 a.m. as the driver, described as being in his late teens or early 20s, was traveling north on Cultus Bay Road near Frog Water Road.

Cotton said the driver was taken to Whidbey General, where he was treated and released.
