Five Clinton residents have filed with the Island County Auditor’s Office to fill Lynae Slinden’s remaining two years as commissioner for the Port of South Whidbey.

Curt Gordon was first off the mark at 8:41 a.m. on Monday, followed by Bob Trenchard, Mona Newbauer and Ed Jenkins, who filed within minutes of each other just after 10 a.m.

Just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Callahan McVay threw his hat in the ring.

Slinden vacated her seat Aug. 12 to pursue other interests and the county instituted a special three-day filing period — which ends today — for anyone wishing to serve the last two years of Slinden’s term.

The five will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot; the candidate with the most votes wins. That person will be eligible to run again in November 2011.

Two Langley residents will also be on the November ballot. Dean Enell and Chris Jerome are candidates for the spot vacated when Port Commissioner Rolf Seitle announced he wouldn’t run for a second term.

The next regular Port of South Whidbey meeting is 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Freeland Library.
