“The Veterans of Foreign Wars on South Whidbey are sending out a call for the community to join with the nation in the Pause for the Pledge on Flag Day, Wednesday, June 14.In 1985, Congress and President Ronald Reagan officially recognized the Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance as part of National Flag Day activities, to take place at 7 p.m. at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, where the flag was still there in 1814 after the British shelled the fort. The Pause takes place at the same time around the country, here on South Whidbey at 4 p.m.This year, VFW Post 7482 has organized ceremonies at all Southend Whidbey Island Banks and at the Langley Post Office. Through the Langley Chamber of Commerce, the VFW has also presented flags to businesses who wish to participate. One or more VFW Post or Auxiliary members will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at each of the banks. We’re calling the event A True Spirit of Americanism and hope to set a precedent for others to follow, said Glenn Nichols, VFW Post Jr. Vice Commander and Flag Day coordinator. Every year since 1994 Whidbey Island Banks in South Whidbey have participated in this most impressive event. The VFW Post 7482 will present a Flag Day program at the Langley Post Office commons starting at 3:45 p.m. Mayor Lloyd Furman will read a Flag Day Pause for the Pledge proclamation, and South Whidbey Daughters of the American Revolution will display their Patriotic Photo Contest citations and give a short patriotic speech. The D.A.R. will also present a large U.S. flag to Mayor Furman for the City of Langley. Taking part will be Regent Audrey Chew, Past Regent Lucille Hansen, Vice Regent Mavis Ratcliff and Flag Chairman Georgia McLeod. Nichols recently presented the Langley Chamber of Commerce with several 8×12-inch staffed American flags to distribute to businesses who wish to participate in their own Pause for the Pledge. A flag was also given to Momentum gym in Clinton for their observance. “
