“The women’s choral ensemble Viriditas, of Portland, Ore., will perform on Whidbey in the singular acoustical setting of Thomas Berry Hall at Chinook, following an appearance at Folklife and at St. James Cathedral over Memorial Day weekend. The island concert is Sunday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. The ensemble sings an eclectic array of distinctive choral literature for women’s voices. The program will include a repertoire of both sacred and secular selections, featuring the compositions of director Joan Szymko, who formed Viriditas in 1994 to explore the ancient connection between music and ritual. The name Viriditas is a Latin word coined by Hildegard of Bingen to describe the greening life force which makes all things grow, expand and celebrate — in this case the greening power of song.In addition to Viriditas, Szymko directs the 100 voice Aurora Chorus ofPortland, a community chorus dedicated to peace through music. The Whidbey concert is being presented by local singers and friends; for more information call Claudia Walker at 579-2279 or email nancyw@whidbey.com”
