In an effort to get more people to enjoy the outdoors, Washington State Parks and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife are offering a couple of free promotional opportunities the next two weekends.

Visitors will be allowed in state parks without a Discover Pass Saturday, June 4 in recognition of National Trails Day, and next Saturday, June 11 which is National Get Outdoors Day.

Outside of the free days that are occasionally offered, a Discover Pass is required to enter state parks. The pass costs either $10 for one day or $30 for the year.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is letting anglers fish for free next weekend, June 11-12, as part of “Free Fishing Weekend.”

During those two days, no license will be required to fish or gather shellfish in any waters open to fishing in Washington.

Anglers also will not need a two-pole endorsement to fish with two poles on selected waters where using two poles is permitted during those two days.

Trout season is well underway on lakes on Whidbey and Fidalgo islands. Many of the lakes are open year-round, however the state stocks several of them with catchable-sized trout in the spring.

Many of the lakes also offer a few warm water species such as bass.

Anglers should note that six lakes and the lower sections of most rivers that flow into Puget Sound are closed to all fishing at this time. More information is available on WDFW’s webpage http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/pugetsound_salmon_update/.
