Barbara Jean Good

Barbara Jean Good died suddenly on Oct. 21, 2007 in Freeland from cardiac arrest.

Barbara was born Jan. 10, 1921 in Sydney, Australia to Catherine and Douglas Munro.

After high school, she took courses in secretarial training before joining the Australian Women’s Army Service in 1942. She served her country until 1945 and left for the United States to be with her husband, William Thomas Good in 1946. Barbara and Bill met in Australia in 1942. They corresponded for nearly two years and were married on Oct. 17, 1944. They were married for more than 61 years until Bill preceded her in death in March 2006.

Barbara and Bill lived in Camas where Bill taught until 1950 when Bill rejoined the Navy. They moved to Moscow, Idaho where Bill was a Naval ROTC instructor. They were transferred to Newport, R.I. and then to Key West, Fla.

When the Korean Conflict ended, Barbara and Bill returned to Washington. They moved to Aberdeen and then to Warden, as Bill’s teaching career progressed. In 1970 they moved to Whidbey Island for the rest of their lives.

Barbara was an active member of St. Hubert Catholic Church during her life on Whidbey Island. She was the parish secretary for more than 10 years serving three different pastors.

After her retirement in 1984 she remained quite active in the church. She was a member of the Altar Society and later the Women of St. Hubert. She attended several scripture study groups and faith-sharing groups. She was on the parish finance council. She worked on church decorations for the various seasons and served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.

Barbara led a deeply spiritual life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter Karen A. Kinder and husband Jerry of Warden; William D. Good of Freeland; Deborah M. Medina and husband Victor of Kent; Kathleen L. Good of Federal Way; and Laurie J. Strempel and husband Ron of Clinton; eight grandchildren, Tom and Heather Kinder, Andy, Brian and Christine Medina, and Amanda, Sarah and Jessica Strempel. She is also survived by her brother Richard Munro of Brisbane, Australia.

A vigil service will be held at St. Hubert Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. The reception for Barbara will follow at St. Hubert.

The celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29 at St. Hubert. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Monday.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Visser Funeral Home, Langley.

Flowers will be appreciated, or donations can be given to St. Hubert Catholic Church for a future memorial for Barbara.
