Run around Central Whidbey for the Race the Reserve Half Marathon, 10K and 5K runs this weekend.

Fees from the race help fund the Coupeville High School graduation party.

The race Saturday, Aug. 10 winds through Ebey’s Landing National Historical Preserve.

The race is set to take runners through the national parkland area known as the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve, whose more than 17,000 acres have been home to Native American tribes like the Skagit Indians as well as explorers like Captain George Vancouver and Joseph Whidbey, for whom the island was later named. Today, the reserve is dedicated to preserving the remains of its farming, shipbuilding and seaport past, as visitors can take in sights like the town of Coupeville as well as Fort Ebey and Fort Casey.

Runners start the out-and-back course near Coupeville Elementary School at the Mickey Clark Field. The course makes two loops around Ebey’s Landing, starting with about a three-mile loop, then a second, longer loop along Terry Road, Fort Casey Road and South Engle Road before returning to the school.

Along the route, runners can see Mount Baker, the Olympic mountain range, Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Cascade mountain range and Mount Rainier.

The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and the half marathon course will remain open for three hours. To join Race the Reserve, visit racethereserve.com; fees are $55 for the half marathon or $60 the day of the race.
