Thanks to some heavy snowfall across the Cascade mountains, the Port Townsend Hat Trick wrestling tournament was a couple of teams short. That was just as well for Falcon head coach Jim Thompson, who was more pleased with the time of South Whidbey’s 6:30 p.m. arrival home than the wrestling outcome.

“The plus out of the day was that we got out early,” Thompson said.

With only three other teams there, the dual meet tournament afforded at least three matches for each of South Whidbey’s wrestlers. Omak and Tenino were unable to attend.

“Omak was really good, I’m glad they weren’t there,” Thompson laughed.

Vashon Island, a ranked 1A team, downed South Whidbey.

“We just got whooped,” Thompson said.

In its next match, South Whidbey beat Port Townsend. Andy Madsen, a junior, suffered his first loss in the 145-pound division this year during his match against Port Townsend. The match went back and forth, Thompson said, with Madsen scoring a reverse and a takedown in what he called, “just a good day of wrestling.”

The Falcons faced a handful of 1A ranked wrestlers at the tournament. Beck Davis, a junior, lost his first match to a ranked wrestler from Vashon Island in the 195. Pierce Jackson, a sophomore heavyweight, had a ranked wrestler on his back, but was unable to secure the pin and lost the match.

South Whidbey ended the tournament with a loss against Montesano. The Falcons’ anchors, seniors Jake Leonard and Pat Monell, returned from injuries last week and wrestled at Port Townsend. Leonard’s shoulder was separated twice. Monell experienced some soreness to a nagging shoulder injury, though he pinned two of his opponents. Kyrell Broyles, a junior, missed the tournament with an injury.

“At this point, hopefully they last the year,” Thompson said of his injured wrestlers.

“I don’t think we’re in really good wrestling shape yet.”

South Whidbey hosts Lakewood on Thursday, one of only two home matches.
