South Whidbey won three events at its only tuneup to the track and field season.

At the all-Whidbey Island, plus Lakewood, meet, Falcon athletes claimed the girls discus and shot put and the boys javelin. All three events were won by South Whidbey’s only returning state meet qualifiers, Angelina Berger and Nick French.

Berger, a senior, started her year with a major mark in the shot put. Her put of 38 feet, 5 inches, was close to Berger’s top marks last season, when she threw a school record 39 feet, 4 inches. Compared to Berger’s first meet in 2012, when she threw only 1 inch farther, she started on a similar foot.

In the discus, Berger’s top mark was far from her capabilities. Last season, Berger never tossed the discus shorter than 91 feet and set a personal record of 124 feet, 9 inches. Her mark at the 2013 jamboree came in at 88 feet, 3 inches, but was still far enough to win the event.

South Whidbey also recorded several top-three finishers. In the girls events: senior Nora Felt took second place in the 800 in 2:33.18; senior Lillianna Stelling took second place in the 1,600-meter in 5:28.58; freshman Tera Applegate took second in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.06 seconds; sophomore Kristen Schuster took second in the discus with an 83 foot, 9 inch toss; and junior Maia Sparkman finished second in the long jump at 13 feet, 6 inches.

For South Whidbey’s boys: French claimed third in the 100-meter in 12.35 seconds; freshman Madison Evans finished third in the 400 in 1:04.24; and junior Andy Madsen finished second in the pole vault at 10 feet.

South Whidbey’s 1,600-meter relays both took second place. The all-senior girls team of Stelling, Felt, Anna Hood and Bonnie Klamm finished in 4:39.82; and the boys team of sophomore Cole Zink, sophomore Truman Hood, sophomore Brandon Chapman and freshman Chris Anderson finished in 3:56.16.

South Whidbey has its first full, Cascade Conference meet of the season against King’s and Cedarcrest on Thursday in Duvall.
