Seth Schille, a Falcon freshman, didn’t know what winning his 120-pound-class match would mean for the wrestling team but his coaches did.

If he pinned his opponent, his points would and did secure a victory for South Whidbey over Lakewood on Thursday night.

“I didn’t realize until after the match when the coaches told me,” Schille said. “We were sorta going back and forth a little bit.”

Schille, the second-to-last match of the night, took to the mat against Lakewood’s Matthew Ramirez. It was an even bout through the first period after neither could gain the upper hand for a takedown. Starting in the down position in the second period, Schille stood up and broke Ramirez’s grasp, getting a point before quickly shooting at his legs for a takedown. In a matter of seconds, Schille had Ramirez on his back for the pin, and the South Whidbey win.

“It was an exciting match,” said Falcon head coach Jim Thompson. “Dual meets are hard, they’re brutal.”

Falcon freshman Hunter Newman opened the meet with a forfeit win in the 132. The easy win put South Whidbey ahead, which the Falcons added to in the next few bouts.

Senior Tyler Russell pinned Michaela Jackson, 132 pounds, in 1:57, just before the first period’s time was up.

Lakewood gained its first points in the 145-pound match. Lakewood’s Drake Mosteller pinned Donnie Sutton in 1:02.

Then came two of South Whidbey’s most consistent weight classes this season, which have nearly guaranteed victories. In the 152, Falcon senior Andy Madsen made quick work of Lakewood’s Austin Hudson, pinning him in 45 seconds. Madsen has seven pins in seven matches.

Kyrell Broyles, also a Falcon senior, followed suit by pinning Lakewood’s Brett Gustaf in 1:31 in the 160-pound match.

Lakewood’s Gage Gilberston won the 170-pound match over Falcon senior Calvin Shimada, who has been ill much of the week, in an 11-3 decision. In the 182, Lakewood’s Jeff Harrison pinned Falcon senior Jose Chavez in 1:48.

South Whidbey and Lakewood traded forfeits in the 106 and 195-pound divisions, which gave Falcon senior Beck Davis a victory.

South Whidbey freshman Cameron Lobdell defeated Lakewood’s Tommy Mosteller 18-11 in the 106-pound bout, setting up South Whidbey’s showdown win by Schille.
