Falcon golfer Brooks Guetlin placed 18th at the 2A golfing state championships in Yakima late last week, with a combined two-day score of 153 (75/78). South Whidbey’s Perry Cooley tied for 31st with 158 (79/79).

Squalicum’s Matt Rawitzer was the eventual state champion with a final score of

136 (64/76).

The tournament was held May 28-29 at the par-72 Apple Tree Golf Course, where the afternoon temperatures hovered in the low 90s.

“Yeah, it was hot and dry but course conditions were outstanding,” said Falcon coach Steve Jones.

Jones noted that, at the state level, it’s the little things that matter.

“Brooks shot out-of-bounds and into the water which cost him,” he said. “He hit the ball as well, or better, as the champion. I think his best golf is ahead of him.”

Guetlin admitted he was a little frustrated.

“I made some bad shots and paid the price for them,” he said.

Jones said that Cooley struggled on the first day, but never gave up.

“His overall sense of dedication and work ethic brought him through districts and to state,” Jones said. He played better on the back nine after fumbling a bit and finished on

a high note.”

Both boys plan to join the grounds crew at Useless Bay Golf Club this summer, get in some practice and prepare for college in the fall.
