Langley 5K Chum Run participants cross finish line

Local long-distance runner Matt Simms finished first in the 12th annual 5K Chum Run on Sunday at Community Park with a time of 17 minutes, 45 seconds. Alex Nydam from Oak Harbor was second with 18:48 and Frank Jacques of Langley was third at 18:51.

South Whidbey youth football team looking for cheerleaders

The South Whidbey Football Association is holding tryouts for a cheerleading squad. There will be one team of 8- to 10-year-olds; the $150 fee includes uniform, insurance and registration. Practices will start the last week of July and there’ll be a day camp on Friday, Aug. 1.

South Whidbey soccer star returns to train youngsters

South Whidbey High School soccer star Joseph Supang is headed back to the rock. Supang was the leading scorer for the 2000 Falcon boys team that placed second in the state and a forward for the 2004 national champion Seattle University team. This summer, he and some friends are putting on a soccer clinic for committed youngsters, age 9 to 17.

4 Whidbey Islanders competete in Triathalon World Championships

The best triathletes in world were on hand Saturday for the 2008 Triathlon World Championships in Vancouver, B.C. Four of them came from South Whidbey. In their respective age groups, Blake Willeford placed seventh in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 42 seconds; Kurt Johnson was 21st in 2:04.19; Patricia Buchanan was 38th in 2:42.07 and Challis Stringer placed 73rd with 2:33.06.

Late hit snaps tie, propels South Whidbey Legion past Lynden

The South Whidbey American Legion Post 141 Falcons flew around the bases in fine style Monday, beating Lake Stevens 4-3. In the final inning with two outs and the score tied, Robert Kirby walked to first, stole a couple bases and scored on Hanna’s second hit. Lake Stevens’ shortstop bobbled the ball and Kirby managed to slide into home.
