The South Whidbey wrestling team traveled to Granite Falls Saturday for the Cascade Conference 2A District contest and six Falcons will progress to regional action in Blaine on Feb. 14.

South Whidbey’s Trevor Romero (189-pound weight class) pinned all three of his opponents to take first place.

“He was the only wrestler to get a pin in the final round,” Falcon coach Jim Thompson said. “His matches went exactly as I thought they would.”

David Monell (215 pounds) and Jordan Broyles (171) both placed second, while Kevin Kinloch (285), Van Morgen (135) and Evan Thompson (125) placed fourth.

“David wrestled extremely well,” Thompson said. “In his final match, the score was close; just two tough kids going at it on the mat. Jordan faced the eventual top gun from Sultan and was very close.”

Six teams competed; the league’s team champions were the Sultan Turks.

“At regionals on Saturday, our guys will have to put on the best performances of the season to qualify for state finals at the Mat Classic,” Thompson added.
