South Whidbey boys soccer squeaks by Sultan

The South Whidbey boys soccer team beat Sultan 1-0 Tuesday.

The South Whidbey boys soccer team beat Sultan 1-0 Tuesday.

“We are back on track,” said Falcon coach Joel Gerlach.

South Whidbey scored when Kevin Rookstool cross-kicked the ball to Noah Moeller, who made the game’s only goal.

Sultan’s best player, Turk Alex Nicholas, was totally shut down by Ben Covelli.

“Ben had this guy’s number,” Gerlach said. “He is their number-one threat, and was held to two shots.”

Gerlach credited the defense, led by Dean Freundlich, Covelli and goalkeeper TJ Russell, for the shutout. He also noted the efforts of Eli Berendt and Van Morgen.

“Eli owned the midfield today; he has been a totally versatile player all year,” Gerlach said. “And Van has been asked to step up into a starting spot; he’s a solid player who works really hard.”

But Gerlach was quick to note it takes 11 players to pull off a victory.

“It was definitely a team effort today,” he said.

The team will celebrate its seniors at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 27 during halftime in the game against Granite Falls.
